I wrote The Uncertain Father in 1986. It is now out of print and the final few copies were destroyed in a warehouse fire. It was born out of a number of strands: my own realisation that little had been written from a father's perspective, a fascination with the anthropology of birth, and a desire to share some of the experiences I had had when speaking with other fathers about their own experiences of fatherhood.

The result is rather uneven and self-indulgent. It is also now rather out of date. But there are still passages of which I am proud and I hope that others may gain some enjoyment, stimulation or encouragement from its pages.
